Paperwork scuppers Liberia squad (again)

Thomas Kojo will be without the services of Mohammed Sangare yet again due to the fact the UK-based midfielder needs his residence permit re-issued.

Sangare was named in Liberia’s last squad against the Democratic Republic of Congo, but the Newcastle u23 player had to pull out for the same reason.

If Sangare left the UK to play for Liberia it is likely he would be refused re-entry.

Sangare told BBC Sport of his frustration with the situation, stating that:

“I can’t wait to play for Liberia but it’s this resident permit that is holding me back,”

“I have spoken to my manager and he wants me to go and play for Liberia. I really want to go to Liberia.”

“This is out of my control now and there is nothing I can do about it, I have chased it up and the next appointment is in November.”

Kojo also lamented the fact he would be without Sangare, commenting that his side would mainly miss the 19 year-old’s physicality.

“He would have been a big advantage for us having a player with his height and quality. We need players like that in our national teams,”

“We were robbed out those qualities when we played DR Congo. They have a lot of big and strong players and they used that advantage against us by playing a lot of long and direct balls.

“So a player like [Sangare] coming into our team is a plus for us.”

The Liberian born midfielder moved to England at the age of 14, where he shortly joined Newcastle’s academy. He has featured mainly for the u23 side, and he is yet to make his full debut.

The slow process of bureaucracy has also hindered Portuguese-based Terrance Tisdell, who, according to his agent, needs police clearance to travel to Africa.
